４日夜、茨城県鹿嶋市の下津海岸にクジラ５２頭が打ち上げられていたのが発見された。５日朝から地元住民や同市職員らが救出活動にあたったが、既に半数以上が死んでいた。そしてニュージーランドを襲った大地震の２日前に（２月２０日）にも、ニュージーランドのスチュワート島という小さな島にクジラが１０７頭、打ち上げられていたことがわかった。

自然動物は地震に敏感であるという説もある。日本は言わずと知れた地震大国。ニュージーランドを地震が襲った２日前に、海岸にたくさんのクジラが座礁していて、４日夜に鹿島市の海岸に５２頭ものクジラが座礁していた。単なる偶然の一致ならいいのだが、ちょっと怖い。
