粕川村を含む勢多郡の1町7村で、前回ひのえうま（1906年＝明治39年）とその前後に生まれた女性約1400人を対象に、結婚生活の実態を調べた。その結果、夫がいない人の割合や、死別、離婚率は中高年ならごく自然な傾向で、06年生まれの未婚率も高くはなかった。

村は調査結果をパンフレットにまとめ、「ひのえうまの女性が結婚生活に不遇だった事実はない」「風説は根拠がなく結婚、妊娠、出産に心配はない」と行政担当者や住民にPRした。「迷信追放の村」はマスコミにも取り上げられ、大きな反響を呼んだ。
